Regarding Courtney Desmond Estate. Built on Courtney Avenue by Anna Desmond, heir to Desmonds department stores. She was the daughter of Daniel Desmond, a native of Ireland who came to Los Angeles in 1862 and opened a hat store. Desmonds grew into a department store with a chain of locations, and the brand continued until recent decades.
Anna Desmond built the dwelling to rent out, and her family, including her widowed mother and siblings, built other residences in this area above Hollywood Boulevard and east of Nichols Canyon. The Courtney Desmond Estate, built in 1926, was declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1989.
The estate consists of five residences. The home at 1807 Courtney Avenue was once the home of actress Margaret Hamilton, who was the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz.
This is private property, not open to the public.
