East Alabama Male College
February 1, 1856
Established by Alabama Methodists
to foster Christian education.
Formally opened on October 1, 1859
Used as a Confederate hospital, 1864-1866.
Deeded to the state for the establishment in Auburn of
The Agriculture and Mechanical College of Alabama
February 26, 1872
Officially renamed
The Alabama Polytechnic Institute
January 27, 1899
This garden, part of an area used for athletics and military drill now memorializes a century of service to Alabama and the nation.
