1. Weinel Hardware & Lumber Marker
Inscription.
Weinel Hardware and Lumber. 318 N Main St. In the early 1800s, August F. Weinel established a lumber yard and livery stable across the street from where you are standing. Years later, their son, Ernst A. Weinel, started the Weinel Hardware store in this building. Built in the mid-1850s, the store provided a nice complement to his father's lumber business. Notice his name at the top of the building. The store continued in operation until the 1960s. The view looking north from this location was known as the Avenue of Trees. Stately oak and elm trees formed an arch over the street, and provided shade as the streetcar ran down the middle of Main Street.
