Inscription.
American Prairie Reserve in Montana maintains a herd of bison that have never been bred with domestic cattle. Bison herds like this are rare and are crucial for restoring the species to the western landscape. In 2020, American Prairie sent two juvenile female bison to live at the National Zoo. These animals' genes are valuable! They represent continuing efforts in the recovery of this iconic species and its habitat. One day, they will breeds with pure-bred males: their offspring will be part of a growing herd of American bison.

Having a hard time telling these two bison apart? When they first arrived, Lucy seemed particularly confident and assertive, with a tendency to be bossy towards her fellow yard-mate, while Gally allowed Lucy to take the lead and was quite shy towards the keepers. As these young bison mature, their personalities may change. Can you identify them from their photos or interactions? What do you notice about their behavior?
