Schlitz Park in Milwaukee in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Brown Bottle Pub/Sternewirt Priveledge
1938
"We can make if faster than you can drink it!"
- Boastful proclamation to visiting US Navy sailors gathered on Galena Street during "Operation Schlitz Fest" (also known as the "Beer & Brat Beachhead")
Up until Prohibition in 1920, union contracts stipulated free beer for employees - tapped at the Brewery's Sternewirt. Afterwards, employees received a weekly allotment of free beer and later were allowed to purchase short filled bottles of beer at a discount.
The Brown Bottle Guest Hall and Hospitality Center replaced Sternewirth in 1938
The name "Brown Bottle" was selected by Erwin C. Uihlein, then president of the Schlitz Brewing Company, as a tribute to commemorate the brewery's 1912 pioneering achievement in the use of bottles made of brown glass - to protect beer from the harmful effects of sunlight.
After nearly 44 years as a Schlitz hospitality center and meeting place for world celebrities, the Brown Bottle closed in the Summer of 1982 (shortly after the Jos Schlitz Brewing Company was acquired by the Stroh Brewing Company of Detroit, Michigan).
