Sabillasville in Frederick County, Maryland — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Lumbering in America
A pre-Civil War map shows nine sawmill sites, including this one, along Owens and Hunting Creeks. This rebuilt mill, and restored mill-pond and race, are typical of the sawmills of the up-and-down era. Later, the faster circular saw (introduced about 1820) and steam power forced them out of business.
Today, sawmills have grown much larger in size and are powered by either electricity or diesel fuel.
