Inscription. Most people are familiar with the giant overshot waterwheels used in grist mills, where the weight of the water produces a slow powerful motion. In sawing lumber, speed rather than power is necessary. The direct drive undershot wheel powered by swiftly running water produces this speed. The push rod (pitman) connected to a crank on the right of the wheel moves a wooden frame or sash holding the saw blade up-and-down. A counter-weight helps balance the weight of the blade and sash to produce a smooth action.

The smaller tub wheel in front can be engaged to return the log and carriage in preparation for another cut.
