"Town’s Meridian Line"…
…runs from this (Northern) Meridian Stone to the Southern Stone, 289.2 feet up Fair Street. William Mitchell (1791-1869), Cashier of the Pacific Bank, astronomer and surveyor, father of Maria Mitchell (1818-1889), erected these Stones in 1840 to monitor the (varying) angle between the magnetic and true North.
This Meridian Line is one of the earliest of its kind in the country.
