This Plaza is named for the Honorable Armand A. Dufresne, Jr. (1909-1994), the first person of Franco-American heritage to serve as Maine's Chief Justice. Prior to the appointment as Chief Justice, he served as Androscoggin County Attorney, as Judge of Probate, as a Justice of Maine's Superior Court, and as an Associate Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. As Chief Justice, he demonstrated extraordinary leadership in modernizing and unifying Maine's Court System. Throughout his entire distinguished legal career, he consistently applied the law in a wise, caring, and humane manner.
