8. Massachusetts Gate Marker
The southeasterly marker flanking the Massachusetts Gate, photographed on the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill, 17 June 1775. The inscription, in Latin and in English translation, is the Massachusetts state motto: "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem." It originates from the seventeenth-century English parliamentarian and political philosopher Algernon Sidney (16231683).
