between 1859 and 1862 by the forerunner of an important Griffin family, David Jackson Bailey. A lawyer, Bailey served many years first as a representative and then senator from Butts County, then as a representative from Spalding County.… The house was begun in 1859, but not completed until 1862. Part of the delay, it is reported, was caused by the confiscation of the mill work enroute from Philadelphia during the Union blockade.
