Helen in Raleigh County, West Virginia — The American South (Appalachia)
Miners Memorial
"dedicated to the coal miners who labored long and hard under very dangerous conditions."
In an effort to remember these miners and their hard work, the Winding Gulf Restoration Organization (WEGROW) built this park and miners memorial. The memorial rests on the site once occupied by the Helen Company Store. This three year project was truly a community effort, with many local and regional businesses and organizations teaming up to make this all come together.
This memorial serves as a reminder of the sacrifices that coal miners made on the job each day. Their hard work provided electricity to the nation, in turn powering its factories and steel mills. The coal they mined powered the nation and the world through both World Wars, and this memorial is "dedicated to the coal miners who labored long and hard under very dangerous conditions."
