Church, built 1860, is significant for its historic associations with the development of the Catholic religion in Cincinnati and the founding of Xavier University. The church is an excellent example of the perpendicular Gothic style.

The present church building is the third Catholic church to exist on this site since 1822. It was designed by Cincinnati architect Lewis Pickett in 1860. A fire in 1882 destroyed the spire and interior of the church. The spire was rebuilt by another Cincinnati architect, Samuel Hannaford.
