Louis Hudepohl II and George Kotte sold their liquor business and reopened the dormant Koehler Brewery in 1885. The brewery was so successful that they built new facilities and quadrupled capacity over the following nine years, becoming one of the largest breweries in the state.

In 1900, following Kotte's unexpected death, Hudepohl became the sole owner of the newly incorporated Hudepohl Brewing Company. A Cincinnatian from birth, Hudepohl became the city's first American-born “beer baron.” Sons-in-law Pohl and Schilderink took over following Hudepohl's death in 1902. The brewery was one of the few in the city to survive Prohibition. It gradually moved all operations to W. 6th St. during the 1950s and 1960s.

1860s Louis Hudepohl II sold both liquor and real estate from the same storefront.
