1. M1 57mm Antitank Gun Marker

Inscription. The M1-57mm was first used in North Africa by the U.S. Army in April of 1942 and quickly replaced the 37mm M3 as an antitank towed artillery piece. The 57mm was based on the British 6 pounder antitank gun design. Initially the only 57mm ammunition available was the armor piercing round; however, by 1945 high explosives rounds were also available. By that time however the 57 antitank gun had lost favor with most American Forces. The Airborne had rejected it in early 1943 as too large and heavy for its requirements. Towed antitank weapons were being phased out because of their lack of mobility compared to self-propelled guns which were being produced in much larger numbers by the end of the war. In spite of its unpopularity the 57 appeared in all campaigns of the European Theater in WWII.
