Regarding Freeman Grant Cary / Pleasant Hill Academy. Excerpt from the National Register nomination:
Located in a community long recognized for its educational history, the Freeman G. Cary House, originally known as Pleasant Hill Academy, is significant for its role within the context and development of higher education in College Hill, Ohio, and for its early historical association with Freeman G. Cary (1810-1888), educator, farmer and founder of Pleasant Hill Academy and the Farmers' College. It was these two institutions, along with the Ohio Female College, that inspired naming of the community "College Hill." From 1833-1845, the Cary House served as the home of Freeman Cary and from 1833-ca. 1835 as a boarding school for high school aged boys enrolled at Pleasant Hill, or "Cary's Academy."
