1. James Lesesne Wells Residence Marker
Inscription. James Lesesne Wells (1902-1993) was an influential artist known for his innovative Linocuts, Wood Engravins, and Color Aquatints. He was active in the Harlem Renaissance before moving to Washington in 1929, and to this house soon after. Wells was a professor at Howard University for almost 40 years and worked with the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. His work, which has been exhibited around the globe, is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, the Phillips Collection, and other major institutions.
