Inscription.
Some years ago this building lost much of its architectural character when its cornice was removed. Despite that it still retains its brick hoodmolds, corbeled cornice, and stringcourse.

Built by 1886 this building was a grocery store for a good number of years. Later it was Long Brothers 5 and 10 Cent Variety Store.

In 1909 Darby and Wood Hardware opened for business in this building and it is thought the tin ceiling was added at that time along with a newer style store front. In 1937, Darby bought out Wood and changed the name to Darby Hardware and continued to operate the business into the late 60’s.

The building was purchased in 1995 by First Iowa State Bank and has been completely renovated with the addition of a period storefront. Future plans call for replacement of the original cornice.
