1. Iowa Bank Building Marker
Inscription.
Built around 1869 this building was originally the west third of the J.C. Morrison Block until 1922 when it was completely gutted and rebuilt by the Iowa Trust and Savings Bank.

The present building is a textbook example of bank design from the first quarter of the twentieth century. The most significant feature is the monumentality of this narrow Neo-classical structure. The building’s vertical emphasis is achieved by the decorative second floor and elaborate cornice.

Before this building was redone by the bank it housed Cal Koontz Jewelry until 1891 when he moved to the Noble Building a few doors to the west. After that it housed a number of businesses until the bank bought it.

The present bank located here was formed in 1930 and represented a consolidation of the old Albia State Bank and the Iowa Trust and Savings Bank.

Visitors may want to take a few minutes to tour the inside of the bank building which retains almost all of the original architectural details that were built into the structure.

Please proceed to the J.C. Morrison Block.
