1. People's Savings Bank Marker
Inscription.
The most notable fact about this building is that out of all of the buildings on the southwest side of the Square this was the only survivor of the fire of 1904. It was built around 1900 by the People’s Savings Bank serving as their headquarters until 1907, when People’s National Bank took over the building and operations. They remained at this location until 1953 when the bank moved its operations to the southeast corner of the Square. When the bank moved Hugh Lundy opened a law office here and in some form that office is still located there in 1996.

Being the only building to survive the fire of 1904 has helped make this building unique. Other features that help make this structure special are its arched windows. The initial response to the round arched façade is that the builder was influenced by the new Neo-classical courthouse but historic photos show that the Miller-Loeb Block and the Drake-Love Building had similar triple arched store fronts in the 1870’s.

Where the inspiration came from to use arched windows will never be known, but the fact that this is the only building in the district to retain this design is important.
