Albia in Monroe County, Iowa — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Hennion Block
This original two story building is believed to have been built between 1890-1898 and occupies the site of one of Albia’s early livery stables. Fire maps show a livery south of this building as late as 1913. The owner, M. E. Hennion was a pioneer farmer having come to Monroe County in 1851 and farmed over 860 acres in 1878 which would have made him a man of some wealth.
Following a fire in 1904, the building was rebuilt and the Mansard roofed third story as added. It was occupied by the Knights of Pythias for a number of years before being converted to a rooming house.
This is one of only two structures in the district with a Mansard roof. The building retains a number of features following restoration including the cast iron store fronts and leaded glass transom windows.
The four oculus windows on the north side are an unusual feature and are original to the building.
