Albia in Monroe County, Iowa — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Samuel Nobel Building
Built by 1891 this two story double front building has housed a number of businesses over the years.
It is thought that the businesses who would lease the building may have been allowed to choose some of the elements of the building front as the two halves of the building have the same pressed metal cornice and corbeled brick frieze work but different hoodmolds.
The east half has a simple pattern built of brick with a slight pedimented cast hood.
The west half hoodmolds are an incised Eastlake design similar to the building to the west.
For many years this building was occupied by the Ralph N. Ewers Store which moved to this location in 1946 from the east side.
The Ewers family were pioneer merchants having operated stores here since the 1870s.
