Inscription.
The oldest Catholic congregation in Middlesex County. St. Peter's was founded in 1829 by Bishop John DeBois of New York in a humble brick building on Bayard Street. The current stone Gothic Revival structure was designed by prominent architect of the time, Patrick Charles Keely, and was constructed between 1854 and 1865. In 1870, the tower was equipped with a magnificent playable chime with nine large bells. The bells were blessed on June 29 of that year, at the feast of Ss. Peter and Paul, and have remained in use since.
