1. Early Businesses in Old Town (#6) Marker
Inscription. Following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, Old Town evolved from a farming community into a commercial area reflecting the diverse skills and trades of the Old Town population at the turn of the century. Some businesses of note include: The House of Glunz, wine and beer distributor (1888); Fiedler & Sons, importers of dress trims and tassels (1875); Piper's Bakery (1870); The Liquid Carbonic Company (1900); Western Wheel Works (1889); Oscar Mayer Sausage Company (1900); and Siebens Brewery (1900). Carriage shops and stables were also important businesses serving the community at the turn of the century. (Marker Number 6.)
