Botanical Name: Cercis canadensis
Common Name: Eastern redbud, American redbud, American Judas tree
Mature Size: 20 to 30 feet tall, 30 to 35 feet wide
Bloom Time: Spring
Flower Color: Pink
Native Area: North America

Jefferson listed Redbud in his book Notes on the State of Virginia, and planted it at Monticello and Poplar Forest, his retreat in Lynchburg. The 1932 Notes on a Restored Garden by Fiske Kimball has a listing of new plantings for Dumbarton House, which included 6 Redbuds. Unfortunately Redbuds are short lived and decline after 20 or 30 years, none of those trees are still around.
