1. Chippewa National Forest Supervisor's Office Marker
Inscription. Welcome to the Chippewa National Forest Supervisor's Office! This log building was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp 705 in 1936.

Made from 100-year old native red pine logged from Star Island and Lake 13 area, the 8,500 square foot building is made form 16,000 lineal feet of red pine logs, each 10-16 inches in diameter. The 50-foot high fireplace is made from 265 tons of split glacial boulders.

Step inside and discover the hand-hammered ironwork, maple stair rails, hand-hewn split log stairs and birds-eye maple flooring that make this building so unique.

In 1976, the Chippewa National Forest Supervisor's Office was listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.

What changes do you see between the historic photos shown here and the building as it stands today?

Ike Boekenoogen, a master woodsman, was the foreman for this project and taught the CCC boys to notch and groove each log by hand. The logs fit without chinking or nailing in true Finnish-style construction.
