Gunnison Chapel
Opened in 1926 to honor the 8th President in St. Lawrence's history, Dr. Almon Gunnison, whose 15 years at the helm from 1899-1914 resulted in tremendous growth for the college. The chapel's neo-gothic design by the noted architect Bertram Goodhue featured a spare interior and just two original stained glass windows. Between 1972 and 1982, 24 additional windows were added as gifts from alumni and other contributors.
Gunnison Chapel has been one of the St. Lawrence campus's most beloved and most photographed buildings.
For over 90 years the building has been a center of campus life, hosting church services, lectures, concerts, weddings, receptions, convocations, and SLU graduations.
Among the most cherished traditions on the St. Lawrence campus is the daily ringing of the chapel bells, at 5pm. to close each school day. Known as the Bacheller Memorial Chime, they were given by the 20th century author and SLU alumnus Irving Bacheller.
Erected by St. Lawrence University.
