Regarding Wheeler Block. Contributing property, Harlan Courthouse Square Commercial District, National Register of Historic Places #94001099.
From the NRHP nomination: Fred A. Smith, architect; Wm. H. Cockerell, contractor/builder. This two-story brick block has two storefronts with three windows across the second floor, separated by a central staircase that accesses the upper floor. Dominant features include a metal cornice, decorative window hoods, and tall, narrow windows that indicate an Italianate influence. Historically, the second floor of the west side of the Wheeler Block housed a hall.
