Inscription. The McDowell-Pappas House served as the home of Charles S. McDowell Jr. during his years in local and state politics. McDowell was born Oct 17,1871 in Eufaula and was educated in local schools and the University of Alabama. He served as mayor of Eufaula, 1908-1912, and was elected to the Alabama Senate in 1918. McDowell served as Lieutenant Governor under Governor William W. Brandon from 1923-1927. During Brandon's absence at the 1924 Democratic National Convention in New York, McDowell became Acting Governor for two days. Brandon endorsed McDowell in the 1926 governor's race but he lost a close election to Bibb Graves. He died on May 22,1943 and is interred at Fairview Cemetery in Eufaula.
