Inscription. After much fundraising, ground was secured for this structure and construction began in the spring of 1876. A race was on to see which building would he completed first — the Hotel Block or the Jacoby Block next door — the hotel won. In December the Central House opened and rooms were rented to the many visitors and college students of the times. In 1923 a huge fire consumed parts of all four store fronts and as a result the third story was removed. Since that time the apartments have continuously refitted to meet the needs of Indianola citizens.

The First National Bank made its new home on the first floor here at 100 West Madison as it was called then. The bank had been in business since 1871 but was later doomed to fail in the Depression era. After the final collapse of the bank in 1932, the Fisher & Hickman Abstract Company set up here. In 1969 Hickman merged with Wilkinson Real Estate and after nine years together, the Warren County Abstract Company took over their books. They remain in business today off the square.

The most recent resident of 100 West Ashland, Salon Panache, celebrates its 25th year in business at the time of this plaque's creation.

Erected by Warren County Philanthropic Partnership; Girl Scouts Troop 225; and Salon Panache. (Marker Number 822-B.)
