"Mr. J.B. Gifford opens a new enterprise — a handsome and well filled storeroom in Hotel Block. The large room, next door to the National Bank's new quarters..."

This building was built in 1876 by Messrs. Gifford and Honnold and was home to the North Side Grocery until 1907. The business changed in name only to J.W. Pollock's because the advertisements of the day read "Better known as the C.W. Honnold Grocery." After Mr. Pollock sold his grocery stock out, the store began selling shoes under the names of Dietrich & Shrier, later Barker and finally Tidball.

On September 18, 1919 a different enterprise took hold here. The E. Haldeman Piano Co. resided here until a terrible fire ruined most of the inventory and destroyed the third story of the structure. Rising out of the ashes, 102 West Ashland started over again as a grocery store once more. As the times and culture of Indianola changed the small grocery store sought to keep up.

Harrison's Ice Cream Parlor opened in 1939 and later became A-C Ice Cream in 1952. As the end of the soda fountain era ended this popular spot changed every ten years or so. The North Side Grill, Wrong Daddy's Tavern, the Spence Account Bar and the Zoo Cocktail Lounge have all been places of passage here for many Indianola residents.
