Indianola in Warren County, Iowa — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
116 West Ashland
One such business was Peck's Grocery. When it opened there were grocers on every side of the square touting "good goods at the lowest prices." However, the citizens of Indianola were loyal customers to the people who ran these small shops, and Peck's enjoyed a long success here. After the close of the grocery, the business changed to that of variety store, or more popularly known as a Five and Dime (see photo above). One chain of such stores — Ben Franklin, resided here for over 25 years.
After the departure of the Ben Franklin store, 116 became a senior center and youth recreation facility. While much needed, rent and taxes became even higher during the early 1970's. Therefore in 1976, as Indianola was growing as a suburb despite the oil crisis, Iowa Realty opened offices here and remained for the next fifteen years.
For the last twenty years 116 West Ashland has been home to Copy Plus. Citizens of Indianola and Simpson College students alike have enjoyed the variety of services provided here including binding, laminating, copies, fax and UPS services. In a day of ever advancing technology Indianola is grateful to have all of these services in one location. We wish them a successful future for many years to come.
