Inscription. In 1898 the news of the day read: "In the way of the new brick and cement walks, new brick blocks and new dwellings going up, if any county seat of Iowa will match Indianola. This city is on a constant and steady growth." This building, along with the four other single story structures to the east, was built by I.L. Eno to complete the north side of the square entirely in brick.

Its first resident, Adam Schimelfenig, moved his meat market business from the south side of the square and the Excelsior Meat Market was born. Always known for quality and service the Excelsior would continue under various management for 45 years. In 1928, the IGA grocery store chain name was added. David Young, the last manager of the Excelsior finally dropped the Excelsior name in 1942 when the store became a Super Valu chain store.

In 1955 the Amsberry Paint, Glass and Wallpaper store relocated here from further down the block. Amsberry's enjoyed a long residence here until their closing in 1982. After a brief vacancy, the building was refitted and became Paul's Pizza & Steak House. Its current resident, Winn's Pizza opened in 2003 and remains a popular family restaurant today.

Erected by Warren County Philanthropic Partnership; Girl Scouts Troop 225; and Winn's Pizza Steakhouse. (Marker Number 814.)
