1. 100 North Howard Marker

Inscription.

"The old buildings on the east side of the public square, so long familiar to the eyes of old settlers, begin to go. They have served their day, and though erected with pride, and pointed to in former years as evidences of the thrift and public spirit of the builders, have for some time been looked upon as old fashioned and out of date. Nobody weeps or even sighs to see them wheeled back to the suburbs; but on the contrary, the expectation of something more beautiful to be put in their places gives us a pleasurable feeling. Well, such is life. But we won't moralize, — let the reader to that." (May 12, 1881 Indianola Weekly Herald)

This corner storefront was built by William Buxton in 1881. Together with its three next door neighbors to the north and its two companions to the east, the Buxton Block completed the south east corner of the square entirely in brick. One early business owner was R. S. Armstrong who advertised weekly under "The Corner Drug Store." His successors, E. B. Osborne and later Arthur Lee did likewise.

In the 1920's the business model changed and became known as the "Corner Cigar Store" instead.

In the ninety years since 100 North Howard has bounced between tavern and cigar store. Although the store has had many different owners and therefore many names, the most recent resident - Irishman's Pub has been here since 1994. Open the door and see why everybody knows your name inside.
