Inscription. This building was erected in 1891 as an addition to the Barker and Johnson building to the north. Barker and Johnson was a successful dry goods store that had opened in 1874. In 1897 Mr. Barker dissolved his partnership with Mr. Johnson and the property was split into two different businesses. Mr. G.E. Johnson continued selling dry goods in this section of the property until the mid 1920's. At that time the nature of the industry changed from retail to restaurant and the property was divided into two smaller parcels.

Swartzlander's Café moved to this address in 1929 from its previous location on the south side of the square. In 1935 Swartzlander retired and sold the business to Mr. Burkey who continued the food and beverage business as well as ran the Union Bus Depot from this location until 1944. The restaurant continued on after changing its name to Shannon's Café and remained open for another 30 years.

The property became vacant in 1975 but became a temporary home to the People's Company Farm Management of Indianola in 1976. After nearly two more years of vacancy the property merged back with 110 North Howard to become a double-front address known only as 110 North Howard. Moureau's Shoe Retail opened here in 1979 followed by Koch's Family Footwear in 1989. The most recent resident — Victoria's Boutique opened in 2008
