1. 116 North Howard Marker

Inscription. In 1895 William Buxton built two businesses 22 ft by 28 ft on the east side of the square. While extremely small compared with today's standards, this building played an interesting role in Indianola's history. For the first thirty-two years, this address was home to a shoe store. It survived a fire in 1926 only to be restored and made into a shoe store again. However just prior to the stock market crash of 1929 the business changed hands and became a millinery shop.

After World War II the storefront became Clark's Barber Shop. The building suffered another fire and was completely redone in 1962. Five short years later the People's Bank bought the Clark building in order to expand its facilities. The massive remodeling required that the partition between the two buildings be removed and an addition created in the rear. The arcade between the square and alley is now all that is left of 116 North Howard.
