Inscription. Mr. William Buxton, a wealthy farmer and great contributor to the business community of Indianola, built this building in 1895. Its first resident, according to the Indianola City Directory of 1896 was the Butler and Miller Jewelry. After Butler & Miller closed in 1907 this address became a series of confectioneries. The first business kept the name M. Varela Candy Kitchen for only a year before becoming the Indianola Kandy Kitchen. For the next 20 years kids and families alike enjoyed the sweets and atmosphere. In 1928 the Stump family took over ownership and the Kandy Kitchen eventually became known as Stump's Café (see photo above).

After the end of World War II, Pete and Wilda Seiler opened a bakery at this location. Many people still remember stopping by for doughnuts before school or for a lunch break from a busy day on the square. After more than 25 years in operation, the bakery closed making way for Pete's Pizza to open. Pete's is enjoying a long residence at this location having opened its doors in 1974 and remains open at the time of this plaque's creation.

Erected by Warren County Philanthropic Partnership; Girl Scouts Troop 225; and Pete's Pizza. (Marker Number 1210.)
