Doctor's Island
This Mathes Ave. location, known locally as Doctor's Island, is the remains of a dump site from the Ludlum Steel Works, who operated the Pompton Furnace in 1860. The site contains refractory brick fragments used as furnace crucible liners during the late 19th century, as well as coal and ash used as landfill. The crucibles were used in the steel making/melting process. The origin of the name Doctor's Island is unknown.
