Regarding Scubie Mills Heritage Trees. In 1906, Hubert (Scubie) Mills was 18 when he arrived in La Verne, then known as Lordsburg, from Tennessee. He became a citrus rancher and delivered mail for the U.S. Postal Service using a horse-drawn cart. He retired from the Postal Service in 1965. Mills was a volunteer with the La Verne Fire Department for 72 years. In 1973 he was Citizen of the Year. He died on March 1, 1990, at age 102. A park on Wheeler Avenue is named for him.
