Haverstraw Landslide Disaster
1906
This monument is dedicated to those who lost their lives during the single greatest tragedy in the history of the Village of Haverstraw.
During a snowy evening on January 8, 1906 around 11:00 P.M., an unusual thaw occurred causing a landslide beginning at Allison Street (Front Street) and ending at Jefferson Street. The other streets destroyed by the slide were Liberty Street, Division Street, and Clinton Street. Many homes and buildings collapsed and burned while sliding down a 100 ft. clay embankment into the brickyards. Of the 19 lives lost, 4 were volunteer firemen.
