Fort Sill in Comanche County, Oklahoma — The American South (West South Central)
German 105mm Field Howitzer, M1898/1909
10.5cm Feld Haubitze 98/09
Inscription.
This German howitzer was highly successful and made up 38 percent of the howitzers used by the German Field Artillery branch in World War I. The 10.5 cm Feld Haubitze 98/09 carriage was very adaptable and eventually mounted on three different cannon systems. The design of the piece was conventional for the period with a hollow box trail, hydro-spring recoil-recuperator system, a splinter shield and a folding spade. The barrel was trunnioned (balanced) at the breech end. This allowed the tube to recoil through the cut-out in the hollow box trail without fear of hitting the trail. Loading could also be accomplished at any angle without raising or lowering the tube. The 10.5cm Feld Haubitze 98/09 and the caisson carried thirty-four rounds and were pulled by two separate limbers carrying twenty-four rounds each. Accompanying the battery was an observation wagon. It had a tripod ladder, which permitted observation from behind a body shield up to eighteen feet above the ground. The 10.5cm FH 98/09 fired a variety of projectiles with a seven or eight bag propellant charge. Rounds were separate-loading and included five high explosive rounds, a shrapnel shell, gas shells and an illuminating round.
