Excerpt from the National Register nomination:
The house is commonly associated with locally prominent citizen, James W. Garrett. Garrett was a local political leader and intelligent entrepreneur.…He served two terms as the mayor of Lawrenceburg first in 1911 and then again in 1913. In March 1912 a smallpox epidemic broke out within the city and county. Garrett appointed a city sanitary committee to act with the county to deal with the situation. The committee successfully prevented the spread of the outbreak within the city limits.…
