The Ossining Bank for Savings
When the Sing Sing Bank for Savings was founded in 1854 with $3,900 on deposit, it was located across Pleasant Square from its current location. The bank's first president was Benjamin Brandreth, whose pharmaceutical factory on the riverfront was the leading industry of the Village. Due to the growing deposits, in 1906 the bank officers hired a prominent NYC architect, Lansing C. Holden, to design a new Beaux-Arts style building. Completed in 1908 at the cost of approximately $50,000, the bank was renamed the Ossining Bank for Savings and had $2,954.00 on deposit. The new building was originally square in plan and elevation with a sky lit, pyramidal roof. It faced Pleasant Square and the Bergh Memorial Fountain. The building served as a bank until 1983.
