1. Gerald R. Ford Marker
Prior to being sworn in, President Ford served as congressman, and as minority leader of the House for 25 years, and as Vice President of the United States for less than a week. A soft spoken college athlete, a reconciler, and dealmaker, Ford lived up to his reputation as an honest and fair negotiator. He was named and approved by an enormous bipartisan majority as vice president by President Richard Nixon, who, shortly after, resigned. Ford is the only person to have held both titles without having been elected to either one.
President Ford faced the challenge of healing an ailing nation, rocked by dissent and disillusion. This was the challenge he confronted unerringly. His decisions were at times unpopular, such as the full pardon granted to his predecessor, yet time has made many of those critics recognize them now as wise ones.
President Ford chose Puerto Rico to host the second yearly G8 meeting of the most important economic powers of the world, landing on our shores on June 27, 1976.
Previo a ser juramentado, el Presidente Ford sirvió como congresista y como líder de la minoría en la Cámara por 25 años, y fue, por menos de una semana, Vicepresidente de los Estados Unidos. Un atleta de hablar pausado, un reconciliador y gestor de pactos, Ford vivió a la altura de su reputación como un negociador honesto y justo. Fue nombrado y luego aprobado por una inmensa mayoría bipartita al cargo de vicepresidente por el Presidente Richard Nixon, quien al poco tiempo renunciaría a su cargo. Ford es la única persona en ocupar ambos cargos sin haber sido elegido a ellos.
El Presidente Ford encaró el reto de sanar a una nación abatida por la disensión y el desencanto. Este fue el reto que afrontó inequívocamente.
