1. Herbert Hoover Marker
As a humanitarian, he led the Committee for Relief in Belgium and the US Food Administration during WWI. His concern for others, as well as his firm belief in the potential of voluntary partnerships between government and business, shaped his outlook and policies.
President Hoover arrived at Ponce on May 23, 1931, where he briefly addressed the public from the city hall. The following day he addressed the legislative assembly at the capitol where he thanked the people of Puerto Rico for its hospitality, generosity, and its will of improvement. President Hoover promised financial aid to help the island overcome the consequences of Hurricane San Felipe (1928). He signed the law changing back the name "Porto Rico" to "Puerto Rico".
Habiéndole servido como Secretario de Comercio a los Presidentes William Harding y Calvin Coolidge, el Presidente Hoover, educado como un ingeniero de minas, fue el último secretario de Cabinete en ascender directamente a la presidencia de la nación sin experiencia electoral previa ni rango militar.
Como lider humanitario, dirigió el Comité de Auxilio en Bélgica y la Administración Norteamericana de alimentos durante la 1ra Guerra Mundial. Su interés por otros, al igual que sus firmes creencias en el potencial de la asociación voluntaria entre el mundo de los negocios y el estado, enmarcó su perspectiva y sus políticas.
El Presidente Hoover arribó a la isla por Ponce, el 23 de Mayo de 1931, donde se dirigió brevemente a quienes lo recibieron desde la casa alcaldía. Al día siguiente se dirigió a la asamblea legislativa en el capitolio donde le agradeció al pueblo de Puerto Rico su hospitalidad, su generosidad y por su voluntad de superación y progreso. Prometió ayuda para superar los estragos dejados por el paso del Huracán San Felipe (1928). Firmó la ley para devolver a la isla su nombre cambiándoselo nuevamente de "Porto Rico" a "Puerto Rico".
