The Mount Pleasant Academy Library
This is the only surviving building
of the Mount Pleasant Academy, a major educational institution for over a century. Opened in 1814, the Academy offered a range of subjects to students of both genders until it was transformed into a military school in 1848, after which time its student body comprised of only male cadets studying a curriculum modeled after that of the West Point Academy. When this building was erected in a decorative Late Victorian style in 1878, the Academy's library contained over 12,000 books. The Mount Pleasant Military Academy was closed in 1925, after which time the building became the offices of the surveyor William Arthur Slater, whose collection of over 4,000 glass plate photographic negatives is now at the Ossining Historical Society.
