Esta escuela, originalmente conocida como San Juan School Number One, se construyó en 1907 sobre el desaparecido Revellín del Principe, baluarte que protegía el acceso a la Puerta de Santiago. Estos habían sido demolidos en 1897 con una porción de la cortina de la muralla para agilizar el tránsito a la ciudad murada y facilitar su expansión. Fue diseñada al estilo Misión, movimiento arquitectónico popular en Estados Unidos en el siglo XIX e inspirado en las misiones españolas en California de los siglos XVII y XVIII. El diseño se encargó a la firma Clarke, Howe & Homer y la construcción estuvo a cargo de Antonio Higuera. Más tarde la escuela fue nombrada José Julián Acosta y Calbo, en honor al maestro, político, periodista y ferviente abogado de la abolición de la esclavitud.

This school, previously named San Juan School Number One, was built in 1907 on top of the site of the Revellín del Principe (Ravelin of the Prince), a bastion that protected the access to the Gate of Santiago. These had been demolished in 1897 to facilitate traffic into the walled city and its expansion throughout the San Juan

Islet. It was designed in the Mission style, a popular architectural movement in the United States in the 19th century, inspired by the 17th and 18th century Spanish missions in California. It was designed by the firm of Clarke, Howe & Homer and built by Antonio Higuera. The school was later renamed José Julián Acosta y Calbo School, in honor of a renowned Puerto Rican teacher, politician, journalist, lawyer and fervent opponent of slavery.
