Inscription. On September 11, 2001 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. The twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City were a direct target of this assault. A third aircraft made impact at the Pentagon and the fourth plane crashed in an open field in Pennsylvania as a result of the courage of many of its passengers. On that fearful day over 3,000 individuals perished, including more than 400 law enforcement officers and firefighters. The horrific casualties and destruction triggered major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism which became the Global War on Terrorism.
