Inscription.  
Rev. Dr. William Martyn Baird — born in 1862 — graduated from Hanover College in 1884. He joined his college friend, Moffett, as an early Presbyterian missionary to Korea, 1891-1931. He founded what has become Soongsil University in Pyengyang in 1897, the pioneer of Korean college education, and served as the first President, 1905-1915. He was the inspirer of the Korean future vision and leader of modern mission education in Korea.

Rev. Dr. Samuel Austin Moffett — born in 1864 — graduated from Hanover College in 1883. He was the pioneer Presbyterian missionary to northwest Korea, 1890-1934. He established the Presbyterian Theological Seminary of Korea in 1901 and served Soongsil College as the third President, 1919-1928.

Soongsil University, the first modern college in Korea, raises this monument in joyful recognition of the outstanding service for Christ through Soongsil of these two Hannover graduates, Baird and Moffett. In Christlike ministry they exemplified Soongsil’s motto “Truth and Service.”

and his wife, Annie Laurie Adams Baird, were appointed to the Chosen (Korea) Mission in 1890 by the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. From 1891 until 1897, they served at the Seoul, Fusan, and Taiku stations. In 1897, Baird was appointed president of the Pyengyang Academy and Union Christian College, a position that he held until his death in 1931.

2. Rev. Dr. Samuel Austin Moffett (Find A Grave).
Samuel A. Moffett was the first Protestant missionary to establish long-term residence in northern Korea. He served in Korea for 46 years before being forced out by the Japanese occupiers who knew he was a serious influence against their government policy of forcing all schools, including private Christian schools, to bow in worship of the Japanese emperor at the Shinto Shrines.
