These bronze monuments honor two important Austrian composers, Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) and Franz Schubert (1797-1828). Both monuments were awarded to the United German Singers of Philadelphia who donated them to the City of Philadelphia. Schubert, in front of you, was awarded to the group as a grand prize in the 16th Annual National Saengerfest in Newark, NJ in 1891. Haydn, located several yards behind you to your left, was awarded at the 21st National Saengerfest in 1906.
Among Schubert's most famous compositions are "Ave Maria". Haydn's masterpiece is the oratorio, The Creation.
The Pair of Lions behind you were given to Fairmount Park by Henry Lisle Waln in 1891.
